Managing Your Time and Priorities in Business School

"The essence of self-discipline is to do the important thing rather than the urgent thing" – Barry Werner.

Managing your time and priorities in business school can be challenging, but it is essential for success. Balancing a demanding course load, networking opportunities, and other commitments can be overwhelming. Still, with the right approach and tools, you can stay on top of your responsibilities and make the most of your business school experience.

This blog post will explore some strategies for managing your time and priorities in business school, including tips for setting goals, creating a schedule, and staying organized. Whether you are a first-year student or a seasoned MBA, these tips can help you make the most of your time and achieve your goals in business school:

  • Set clear goals and priorities: Before you start your semester, take some time to think about what you want to achieve during your time in business school. Whether getting good grades, networking with classmates, or gaining hands-on experience, ensure you clearly understand your goals. Once you have your plans in place, you can prioritize your tasks and activities to ensure they align with your goals.

Quadrant 1 is for immediate and essential deadlines.

Quadrant 2 is for long-term strategizing and development.

Quadrant 3 is for time-pressured distractions. They are not necessary, but some want them now.

Quadrant 4 is for those activities that yield little, if any, value. These are often used to take a break from time pressure and essential activities.

·       Create a schedule and stick to it: One of the most effective ways to manage your time in business school is to create a program and stick to it. This can include a daily schedule, a weekly schedule, and even a semester schedule. Ensure you have time for classes, studying, projects, and social activities. Be sure also to allocate some free time to relax and recharge.

·     Learn to say no: As a business student, you will be bombarded with opportunities and invitations, some of which may need to align with your goals and priorities. Learning to say no to things that aren't a good use of your time is essential. This will allow you to focus on the most important things to you and will significantly impact your success.

·       Use time management tools: Various tools help you stay on track. This can include apps for scheduling, task management, and note-taking. Some popular options include Todoist, Trello, and Evernote. These tools can help you stay organized and on top of your tasks.

·       Take breaks and make time for self-care: It's essential to take breaks throughout the day to recharge and refocus. This can include taking a short walk, meditating, or doing a quick workout. Additionally, make sure to make time for self-care activities such as eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and making time for hobbies and interests.

·       Get organized: This includes planning your study schedule, keeping your workspace clean and organized, and keeping your digital files and folders in order. When everything is collected, you'll be able to focus on the task and minimize distractions.

·       Learn to multitask effectively: Multitasking can effectively manage your time, but it's essential to do it correctly. Instead of trying to do multiple things at once, focus on one task at a time and switch between tasks as needed. This will help you stay focused and avoid burnout.

·       Learn to delegate: As a business student, you will work on many projects and tasks. Learn to trust some of the functions of your classmates or team members. This will free up your time and help you develop leadership and teamwork skills.

I recently learned powerful skills in atomic habits, where the author James Clear shares 2 minutes rule that can save a lot of time. According to the author, if any work can be done in less than 2 minutes, you should do it at that time instead of procrastinating it for later. These 2 minutes of rules can aid in managing our task with greater ease.

Managing your time and priorities in business school can be challenging, but by following these strategies, you can make the most of your time and achieve your goals. Remember to set clear goals, create a schedule and stick to it, learn to say no, use time management tools, take breaks and make time for self-care, get organized, learn to multitask effectively, and learn to delegate. With these strategies in place, you'll be well on your way to success in business school and beyond.
